Jenny Undercofler, DMA

LP Candidate

As a psychoanalytic candidate at Pulsion, I am interested in working with teens and adults of all ages who seek a deep understanding of the world. Contemporary life pressures us to have quick answers to complicated questions, and I believe that the psychotherapeutic space offers the opportunity to explore better and longer-lasting answers. In session, we can take the time to look at things from multiple angles, free from judgment and the overwhelming need to be pragmatic.

Partly because of my background as a classical pianist, I approach listening as a creative act. There are many commonalities between music teaching and psychotherapy, but for me the most important is the prioritization of private space to develop ideas, even fragmentary, into narratives that can sustain the self. I am particularly fascinated by the intersections between musical listening and psychoanalytic listening, and the effects that language has upon the psyche, in both music and therapeutic settings.

In addition to pursuing the LP program, I remain active as a music teacher. I received a Doctor of Musical Arts from the Eastman School of Music, and Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from The Juilliard School.
